And the acrobatic jumping sequences are almost a bit too easy.

The camera work could certainly be improved, as the generally quite exciting fight scenes can sometimes turn a bit too chaotic due to losing sight of an enemy. The controls are simple, yet allow a very nice variety of combat maneuvers.

And there are auto-run levels that offer the opposite pacing extreme, putting the hero at a forced full-on sprint and having you only able to control his jumps – those play a bit like classic Donkey Kong Country's mine cart levels, minus the cart. There are stealth-focused sequences where the Captain must quietly stalk his foes, staying out of their line-of-sight until he can creep close enough to strangle them from behind. Super Soldier DS luckily isn't all about the fighting, though, so other aspects of the design help to redeem that drawback. It's a shame, too, because Griptonite tried to include a lot of depth in the Captain's brawling abilities with several melee moves, punch combos, flying kicks and the like – but you just won't ever use them. Taking up residence on the far left or right of the screen, then chucking that magic disc again and again until all the Nazi flunkies fell. The only reliable technique I could find for clearing those chokepoints was shield-spamming.
#3DS CAPTAIN AMERICA SUPER SOLDIER SERIES#
Enemies frequently spawn out of nowhere on either side of the hero, then pummel him with a series of punches so persistent that you can't counterattack at all – you just watch his health meter drain until he's dead, then the level starts over. Only the good Captain has a common tendency of getting beat down himself in those endless brawls with brainless bad guys. You play as Captain America, he runs, he jumps, he beats up mindless minions – good old superhero stuff. This is the type of movie/comic tie-in game you'd probably expect. Because the game doesn't seem to let you make much forward progress unless you just spam the shield-tossing A Button over, and over, and over again. Maybe too versatile and useful, actually. And Griptonite Games must agree with me, because the shield is his most versatile and useful tool in their version of Captain America: Super Soldier for Nintendo's DS. Tossing that flying disc of red, white and blue like a boomerang, watching it ricochet off Nazis' skulls and come bouncing right back to his hand – that has to be the most distinctive and memorable thing about the Captain. The serum that gives him super-soldier conditioning? Possibly, but there are lots of other heroes with physical abilities just as keen as his. His patriotism? Maybe, but that's taken a lot of hits over the years. Try to boil Captain America down to just one defining characteristic.
